Leaves of Absence and Reinstatement

If you need to take a leave of absence from RISD, request reinstatement, or withdraw permanently, see below to learn the process.
Leaves of absence and withdrawals
You may take a leave of absence from your studies at RISD for personal, medical and financial reasons, or for military service. A leave of absence is temporary; you are expected to return after a set period of time.
You may apply for a leave of absence for a period of up to one year, or up to two years for military service. If you do not return after your leave, you will be officially withdrawn. You can also request a withdrawal through the form below to leave RISD permanently. For more information about leaves, refer to the leave of absence policy.
To begin your leave, submit the request form. If you are an international student, you must also complete a leave of absence request in Terra Dotta in addition to the form below.
Apply for reinstatement
When you are ready to return from a leave of absence, submit a reinstatement application by the following deadlines:
- Fall semester return: February 15 for graduate students, April 1 for undergraduate students
- Wintersession/spring semester return: October 1
We encourage you to speak with your department head before applying for reinstatement. Made on a case-by-case basis, reinstatement decisions depend upon space availability in your program and require clearance from institutional approving parties.
See below for more considerations.
Medical leaves
In addition to the standard reinstatement application, you must submit a medical reinstatement addendum that confirms you are sufficiently recovered, in order to return from medical leave.
International students
International students on an F-1 visa must resubmit immigration documents in order to receive a new SEVIS record and I-20. Please reach out to International Student and Scholar Affairs (ISSA) at issa@risd.edu for further information and support.
Late applications
If you submit your application after the deadline, it may not be reviewed in time for reinstatement. You also risk space constraints, lack of available classes, and document and visa processing constraints, all of which can impact your eligibility to resume enrollment.
Transfer credits
RISD accepts a maximum of 12 transfer credits. If you take courses while on a leave of absence, you can only transfer credits up to the 12-credit maximum. (For instance, if you have already transferred nine credits and earn six while on a leave of absence, you can only transfer a maximum of three of the six credits.
Financial aid
Returning students do not resubmit for RISD’s institutional financial aid. However, if you are a domestic student you will need to submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the deadline for the academic year you plan to return.
Information about deadlines, and instructions for applying for federal and/or RISD institutional financial aid are available from Student Financial Services (SFS).
Graduation requirements
For absences of four or more years, in order to graduate you must satisfy the graduation requirements in place at the time of your reinstatement—not the requirements in place prior to your leave of absence.
